Fire Performance
Fire design is in accordance with SCI NCCI PN005 (Eurocode) and SCI Publication P359. Two fire design methods are available within the ComFlor 9 design software: the Mesh and Deck Fire Method (mesh reinforcement only) and the Bar Fire Method (reinforcement bars in each deck trough, positioned 25mm above the trough base). The method required depends on the span, slab depth, fire period, and applied load for your specific project.
The minimum slab depths in the table below are indicative for the Mesh and Deck Fire Method with normal weight concrete. At longer spans or higher fire periods, trough bar reinforcement will typically be required and minimum slab depths increase accordingly. The 140mm NWC minimum is a hard floor for this profile. Contact our technical team for project-specific confirmation before proceeding to design.
| Fire rating | Indicative min slab depth, NWC | Indicative min slab depth, LWC |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | 140mm | 130mm |
| 1.5 hours | 155mm | 145mm |
| 2 hours | 165mm | 155mm |
| 3 hours | 195mm | 180mm |
| 4 hours | 215mm | 200mm |
Indicative values only. Actual minimum slab depths depend on span, applied load, gauge, fire design method, and reinforcement specification. Trough bar reinforcement is typically required at longer spans and higher fire periods. Note: the 140mm slab depth requires mesh at 25mm cover rather than the standard 30mm. Always verify against project-specific span and fire tables. Contact our team for confirmation.
Finishes and Options
- Galvanised Z275 (Galvatite) — standard coating to BS EN 10346 S350GD+Z275, suitable for internal floors in non-aggressive environments
- Colorcoat FD pre-finished soffit — factory-applied pre-finished colour coating to the soffit, giving a bright, attractive finish where no suspended ceiling is specified. Available in a range of colours. Ideal for Grade A commercial office and industrial fit-out where the deck soffit will be visible.
ComFlor 80 vs ComFlor 60 – Which Should You Specify?
The difference between ComFlor 60 and ComFlor 80 is profile depth and span capability. ComFlor 60 is used for standard spans, while ComFlor 80 allows longer spans and reduces secondary beam requirements.. Choosing between ComFlor 60 (CF60) and ComFlor 80 (CF80) depends on span requirements, structural design, and overall project efficiency.
When to Use ComFlor 60
ComFlor 60 is ideal for:
- Standard span applications
- Residential and smaller commercial projects
- Designs where secondary beams are already part of the structure
- Projects prioritising lower upfront material cost
It provides a well-balanced solution for most typical floor builds, offering reliable performance with efficient installation. ComFlor 60 is a 60mm deep composite steel decking profile used for standard span applications, while ComFlor 80 is an 80mm deep profile designed for longer spans and reduced secondary beam requirements. ComFlor 80 is typically more efficient for larger commercial projects where structural optimisation reduces overall costs.
| Feature | ComFlor 60 (CF60) | ComFlor 80 (CF80) |
|---|---|---|
| Profile Depth | 60mm | 80mm |
| Span Capability | Standard spans | Longer spans |
| Beam Requirements | More secondary beams | Fewer beams required |
| Concrete Volume | Moderate | Reduced overall volume |
| Installation Speed | Fast | Faster on large areas |
| Best For | Residential / small commercial | Large commercial / long spans |
| Cost Efficiency | Lower upfront cost | Lower total structural cost |
What is the difference between ComFlor 60 and ComFlor 80?
The main difference is depth and span capability. ComFlor 80 allows longer spans and reduces the need for secondary beams, making it more efficient for larger projects, while ComFlor 60 is better suited to standard applications.
When to Use ComFlor 80
ComFlor 80 is better suited for:
- Longer span requirements
- Projects aiming to reduce secondary beam counts
- High-load commercial or mixed-use developments
- Situations where structural efficiency impacts overall cost
By spanning further between supports, ComFlor 80 can significantly reduce steelwork requirements — often delivering lower total project cost despite a higher sheet price.
Key Difference in Simple Terms
- ComFlor 60 = standard, versatile, cost-effective upfront
- ComFlor 80 = fewer beams, longer spans, better overall efficiency
Which One Is More Cost-Effective?
While ComFlor 60 may appear cheaper per m², ComFlor 80 often becomes more economical when:
- Fewer beams are required
- Installation time is reduced
- Concrete and reinforcement are optimised
👉 In most larger projects, the saving comes from the structure — not the sheet price
