Why This System Is Used

Deep sinusoidal profile: The 100mm depth provides significantly greater structural stiffness than shallower sinusoidal sheets, allowing wider purlin spacings and longer spans. The 240mm pitch and curved crowns (101mm radius) and valleys (70mm radius) deliver both load capacity and effective water shedding.

Long span capability: SR100+ achieves spans from 3.0m to 6.2m depending on gauge and load case, significantly reducing the need for intermediate supports and lowering support frame costs on large roof areas.

Material choice: Available in three gauges (0.7, 0.9, 1.2mm) from a single production line. Steel grade S350 to BS EN 10143:2016 ensures consistent mechanical properties. Galvanised (Z275) and polyester white (Z150 + 25μm) coatings provide durability in exposed environments.

Fire compliance: Class 1 (BS 476 Pt7) and Class 0 surface rating where specified, supporting building regulations for medium to high risk properties.

Design and Specification Considerations

Load Cases and Deflection Criteria

SR100+ is designed and tested to accept both gravity loads (live load plus permanent load) and uplift loads (wind suction). Deflection limits are set at Span/200 for gravity cases and Span/90 for uplift cases, applied with a partial safety factor of 1.5 on material strength.

Bearing requirements are 60mm on supporting frame members. This ensures that concentrated loads at fixing points do not cause crushing or local deformation of the trough. Support frame design should specify adequate stiffness to limit deflection of the primary structure, reducing secondary impacts on the roof sheeting.

Site Conditions and Pitch

SR100+ is suitable for pitches between 5° and 30°, with performance optimised in the 10° to 25° range. At lower pitches (below 8°), sealant may be applied to side lap joints in exposed locations to enhance weather tightness. This is a site decision dependent on local exposure and building orientation.

In areas of severe exposure (coastal, high altitude, industrial pollution), the polyester white finish is recommended over galvanised to provide longer term weather protection. Specify BS EN 10346:2015 Zn/Al alloy coating (Z275 equivalent) for enhanced corrosion resistance if required.

Gauge Selection and Cost Trade Offs

The 0.7mm gauge is cost optimised for standard span applications (3.0m to 4.0m) with conventional live loads. The 0.9mm gauge extends capability to 4.0m to 5.0m and is widely specified in multi span continuous layouts. The 1.2mm gauge is used for long spans (5.0m to 6.2m) or where additional stiffness is required, for example in heavily trafficked plant areas or high snow load regions.

Our technical team can review load cases and recommend gauge to balance specification durability with project budget. Load tables and span charts are provided as part of our supply and design service.

Installation Considerations

Sheet Fixing and Lap Details

Each sheet is fixed to the support frame at every trough at sheet ends. Intermediate fixing is every trough along the length of the sheet. End lap is 150mm, allowing for a single row of fasteners; side lap is 450mm, providing sufficient engagement for wind resistance. Side support members are spaced 450mm apart to ensure lateral stability during installation and service.

Fastening and Tool Hire

Self drilling screws (typically 6.3 x 32mm or 6.3 x 38mm) are standard for both end lap and side lap fixing. A pneumatic or electric fixing tool significantly speeds installation and ensures consistent torque. RMD Profiles offers tool hire for projects requiring faster cycle times or where labour cost saving is a priority.

Handling and Sheet Length

Maximum sheet length is 12m. However, at the longer lengths and heavier gauges, the weight of individual sheets increases significantly (1.2mm gauge at 16.29 kg/m²). Site teams should plan lifting and positioning carefully, particularly for sheets exceeding 6m in length. Mechanical lifting is recommended for all gauges on sheets above 8m.

Safety and Weather Protection

Installation teams should follow standard roof safety practices, including use of harnesses, edge protection and weather monitoring. For projects involving full roof replacement or high risk areas, RMD Profiles supplies and installs proprietary safety netting to protect personnel and prevent debris falling into the building during the works. This is available as a supply only or supply and fix service depending on your requirements.

Inspection and Quality Control

Visual inspection of sheets before fixing should check for transport damage, correct gauge and coating, and that fixing details match the specification drawings. Post installation, all fasteners should be inspected for correct seating and torque. Our technical team can advise on inspection protocols and can arrange site visits for larger projects.

Common Problems This System Solves

Spanning Large Roof Areas

SR100+ reaches 6.2m spans without intermediate supports, significantly reducing steel frame costs and simplifying installation on broad industrial and commercial structures.

Weather Tightness

Deep 100mm sinusoidal troughs with 101mm crown radius shed water effectively. Side lap detail (450mm) and end lap (150mm) are proven in exposed UK and temperate climates.

Fire and Building Control

Class 1 fire rating and Class 0 surface assessment meet stringent building regulations for medium to high risk commercial and industrial properties.

Wide Purlin Spacings

The 100mm depth and high section properties allow purlin spacings well beyond what shallower profiles can achieve, reducing the total number of purlins and associated steelwork costs.

Installation Speed and Cost

The 720mm cover width combined with long span capability means fewer sheets and fewer support members per roof area, delivering faster installation and lower overall project costs.

Refurbishment and Overlay

SR100+ can be laid over existing flat or damaged roofing without extensive substrate preparation, shortening project timelines and reducing waste removal costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum span for SR100+ at 0.7mm gauge?

At 0.7mm gauge, SR100+ typically achieves spans of 3.0m to 4.4m depending on applied loads and deflection criteria. The 0.9mm gauge extends this to approximately 5.0m, and 1.2mm reaches up to 6.2m. Exact spans are determined by load case (gravity, wind uplift, snow) and support conditions (single, double or multi span). Request a load table from our technical team to confirm span for your specific project.

How does SR100+ compare to SR60+ for spanning capability?

SR100+ has significantly greater depth (100mm vs 60mm), which delivers higher section properties and longer span capability. Where SR60+ spans up to 5.2m, SR100+ reaches 6.2m. The trade off is a narrower cover width (720mm vs 850mm), so more sheets are needed per metre of roof width. SR100+ is the better choice where span is the priority; SR60+ is more efficient where purlin spacings are moderate.

What is the difference between galvanised and polyester white finishes?

Galvanised (Z275, 275g/m²) is cost effective and provides adequate corrosion protection in most UK environments. Polyester white (150g/m² Z150 base + 25μm topcoat) offers enhanced durability in coastal, industrial or high rainfall areas, with longer service life and better colour retention. For most new builds and refurbishment projects in standard exposure, galvanised is sufficient; polyester is recommended for harsh or exposed locations.

How does RMD Profiles’ supply and design service work?

Our supply and design service includes technical review of your structural loads, gauge recommendation, fixing detail drawing, and setting out layouts for the installation team. This is a charged service that removes guesswork and ensures compliance with building regulations. It is particularly valuable on complex roofs, large areas or where refurbishment requires overlay design. Contact our team to discuss scope and pricing.

Is sealant required on SR100+?

Sealant is not routinely applied on SR100+ unless specified for low pitch or very exposed applications. The deep sinusoidal profile and 450mm side lap provide excellent water shedding in standard UK climates. Sealant application is a site decision based on pitch, exposure and water penetration risk. Our technical team can advise if your project location or pitch warrants sealant.

What are the maximum sheet lengths available?

SR100+ sheets are supplied up to 12m in length. Longer sheets reduce the number of end laps and fastening points, lowering installation labour and material waste. However, at longer lengths the sheet weight increases considerably (particularly at 1.2mm gauge), so mechanical lifting should be planned for sheets exceeding 8m. On projects with roof lengths exceeding 12m, multiple sheets are joined using 150mm end lap detail.
