In the bustling outskirts near London, Barnet Hospital embarked on a transformative journey, earmarking a £6.5 million redevelopment to enhance urgent and emergency care (UEC) facilities. A New Dawn for Urgent and Emergency Care
At the heart of the Barnet hospital redevelopment was the construction of a single-storey Resuscitation Ward at the A&E Department’s forefront, complete with six bays and a dedicated Paediatric area. Additionally, the project aimed to integrate a Clinical Decision Unit within the Level 1 courtyard, adjacent to the existing Observation Ward, marking a critical expansion in the hospital’s capacity to manage urgent and emergency cases more effectively.

The project’s ambition stretched beyond structural enhancements; it was designed to streamline the patient journey from arrival to treatment, ensuring timely care. This included establishing a new entrance for urgent and emergency patients arriving on foot, facilitating a swift assessment and transfer to the appropriate care setting within the hospital. The redesign aimed to segregate the flow of patients based on the severity of their conditions, directing them to either the Emergency Department (ED) for more serious cases or to the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) for less critical conditions.
